Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
