Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
