Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
