Be smart, play cunning, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
