Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
