Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
