Be smart, play brilliant, and pickup craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
