Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
