Be clever, play cunning, and become versed in craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
