Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
