Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
