Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
