Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
