Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
