Be cunning, play clever, and master craps the right way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
