Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
