Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
