Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
