Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
