Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win.
