Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps.
