Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
