Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
