Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
