Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
