Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
