Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
