Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
