Be smart, play cunning, and master craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
