Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
