Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
